Rather than replacing these tools, ReconMaps brings them together into a single system that helps convoys organize, communicate, navigate, and document every trip.

Convoy Awareness

Know where every member of your convoy is at a glance. ReconMaps was designed to provide shared situational awareness so groups can stay coordinated, even when they become separated on the trail.

Convoy Management

Popular trail rides can often include 15–20 vehicles, making it difficult for every driver to travel together through obstacles, recoveries, or varying terrain.


With ReconMaps, large convoys can organize into smaller, more manageable groups while remaining part of the same overall convoy. Before heading onto the trail, each driver selects a vehicle identifier, and operating channel. As members join, the convoy roster updates automatically, providing a clear picture of who is participating and how the convoy is organized.

Whether a group separates because of different experience levels, vehicle capabilities, or trail conditions, ReconMaps provides the foundation for keeping every driver connected and aware of the overall convoy.

Echo 11 Channel

When a convoy becomes separated or an important event occurs, every group needs a common point of reference.


Echo 11 is ReconMaps' dedicated convoy-wide channel for sharing high-priority waypoints such as vehicle recoveries, trail obstacles, or emergency situations. Unlike the individual convoy channels, Echo 11 broadcasts important locations to every participating group, ensuring that all drivers can navigate toward the same destination.

As you travel toward an Echo 11 waypoint, ReconMaps continuously updates the map view, keeping both your vehicle and the destination visible to provide clear situational awareness throughout the approach.

The camera automatically adjusts as you approach an Echo 11 waypoint, keeping both your current position and the destination in view. This allows drivers to maintain awareness of their progress without constantly repositioning the map.

Breadcrumb Tracking

Every trip tells a story.


As you travel, ReconMaps leaves a breadcrumb trail behind your vehicle, creating a visual record of the route you've taken. Whether you're exploring unfamiliar terrain, retracing your path after reaching a destination, or reviewing where you've been at the end of the day, breadcrumb tracking provides an easy way to see your journey unfold on the map.

In the Founder Beta, breadcrumb tracking records your route for the current session, allowing you to follow your path while you're on the trail.

Photos & Waypoints

Drop a waypoint in near real time with just a click or two. Create a standard marker, attach a photo, or broadcast an Echo 11 location to the convoy. Add a title and description to document obstacles, recovery locations, scenic overlooks, or any point of interest directly from the map.


Dedicated map icons identify each waypoint type, allowing markers, photo locations, and Echo 11 broadcasts to stand out along your breadcrumb trail and provide an easy-to-follow visual record of your adventure.

Multiple Map Layers

Every adventure is different. Select the map that best fits your terrain—from traditional navigation maps to topographic and off-road mapping.


Founder Beta includes OpenStreetMap and OpenStreetMap Cycle as the available base maps. Future releases are planned to support additional map sources, including custom maps, USGS topographic maps, GeoPDFs, and aerial imagery.


Imagine arriving at a trail junction where the route ahead is uncertain. With a few taps, the trail leader can switch between a topographic map, USGS map, aerial imagery, or a custom trail map in real time, using the best available information to choose the safest or most appropriate route.

Our Story

ReconMaps began after a real-world incident during an off-road event at Anthracite Adventure Area (AOAA).

A large convoy had split into multiple groups on the trail.

One group experienced a vehicle rollover.

The second group needed to regroup with the first group, but there was no simple way to communicate a shared location and bring everyone together.

Radios provided communication, but there was no common visual reference showing where every vehicle was located.

That experience led to a simple question:

How can a convoy maintain awareness of itself while operating in remote terrain?

ReconMaps was created to answer that question.


Development Updates

May 2026 — Convoy Awareness

ReconMaps successfully displayed multiple vehicles on a shared map, establishing the foundation for convoy awareness and real-time field testing. Each vehicle is identified by name and role, allowing convoy members to quickly determine who is ahead of them, who is behind them, and who they need to contact by radio.

Convoy Map

The convoy map provides a simple visual representation of the vehicles traveling together. The yellow triangle identifies the convoy leader, the magenta square identifies the sweep—the last vehicle in the convoy— and the blue dot identifies the current user. Other convoy members are displayed as individual vehicle markers with their identifiers.

In this example, STJ Fred can immediately identify the vehicles ahead of and behind him. If communication is needed, the map provides the vehicle identifier needed to call that specific driver over the radio.

Convoy Management

The Convoy Management screen provides the information needed to organize and monitor the convoy:

  1. Convoy Name — Identifies the club or convoy, typically using an area code and a short three- or four-letter identifier.
  2. ReconMaps Channel — Selects the operating channel. ReconMaps currently provides ALPHA, BRAVO, CHARLIE, and DELTA, plus ECHO 11, a priority channel available to all users.
  3. Vehicle Identifier — Provides a recognizable name for the vehicle, typically combining vehicle color/type and the driver's name so another member can identify and radio that vehicle.
  4. Members — Displays the number of vehicles currently participating in the convoy.
  5. Channel Counts — Shows the number of vehicles operating on each channel along with the total convoy count, giving the convoy leader a quick accountability check.
  6. Convoy Roster — Lists each convoy member and their assigned role and symbol. A blue symbol always identifies the current user's device.

Note: Minor discrepancies between the Convoy Map and Convoy Management screen reflect limitations of the static parking-lot test, as convoy positions and roles are established dynamically during vehicle movement.

June 2026 — Telemetry

A live telemetry overlay was introduced to display GPS status, heading, speed, connectivity, position, and convoy information during Founder Beta field testing. This milestone significantly improved diagnostics and accelerated development.

Telemetry Overlay

For Founder Beta, the telemetry overlay provides an at-a-glance view of the information needed to verify that ReconMaps and the connected device are operating correctly. It is especially useful during field testing because screenshots capture both the map and the system information needed to diagnose unexpected behavior.

  1. Test Session — Date, time, and application runtime identify when a test occurred and how long ReconMaps had been running when a screenshot was taken.
  2. Convoy Configuration — Displays the convoy name, active channel, vehicle identifier, and number of detected convoy members. The layout mirrors the Convoy Management window, allowing users to recognize each field at a glance and quickly confirm that the device is configured for the correct convoy.
  3. Connectivity — Shows whether ReconMaps has an active internet connection. During Founder Beta, this provides a quick indication that the phone's cellular data or hotspot connection is functioning correctly. Future versions may support radio-based communications, such as GMRS or amateur radio, enabling convoy tracking in areas without cellular coverage.
  4. Vehicle & GPS Status — Speed, GPS accuracy, and heading provide important diagnostic information when evaluating GPS performance, vehicle movement, and map-camera behavior.
  5. Position — Displays the current WGS84 latitude and longitude. Changing coordinates provide an immediate indication that the device is receiving and updating its position as the vehicle moves. WGS84 is the standard coordinate reference system used by GPS-enabled phones.

Future Development: The telemetry overlay is intentionally prominent during Founder Beta because of its diagnostic value. Future versions of ReconMaps will allow users to customize, minimize, or disable telemetry information. Additional coordinate display formats are also planned, including formats commonly used with USGS mapping.

July 2026 — Map Camera Controls

Map camera controls were introduced to improve navigation and situational awareness during field use. Users can zoom, re-center and follow their vehicle, and switch between North Up and Heading Up views, providing greater control over how the map behaves while driving and exploring the trail.

Map Camera Controls

This early Founder Beta screenshot captures an important part of field testing. The cyan breadcrumb trail shows significant GPS wandering and repeated position changes while the vehicle was stationary or moving slowly. Testing like this helped identify that the GPS and motion thresholds were too sensitive. The GPS qualification and movement settings were subsequently adjusted so that small position fluctuations would not be recorded as actual vehicle movement, producing a cleaner and more useful breadcrumb trail.

The map camera provides three basic controls, identified on the right side of the screen:

  1. Zoom In / Zoom Out (+ / –) — Changes the map scale, allowing the user to move between a close view of the vehicle and a wider view of the surrounding area.
  2. Center / Follow — The map camera provides two related functions for controlling the vehicle's position on the screen:
    • Center — Re-centers the map on the user's current vehicle after the user has manually panned away to explore another area of the map.
    • Follow — Keeps the vehicle centered as it moves, allowing the map to automatically move with the vehicle's position. Manually panning the map temporarily exits Follow mode so the user can explore the surrounding area.

    The user can tap the Center / Follow control to return to the vehicle and resume automatic following at the previously selected zoom level.

  3. North Up / Heading Up — The map camera can operate in two orientation modes:
    • North Up — The map remains fixed with north at the top of the screen. As the vehicle changes direction, the vehicle marker rotates to show its direction of travel. This traditional map orientation helps the user maintain geographic awareness and orient themselves to the surrounding area.
    • Heading Up — The display rotates as the vehicle changes direction so that the vehicle's direction of travel remains toward the top of the screen. In this mode, the north indicator moves around the display, continuously showing the direction of north as the map rotates beneath the vehicle.

August 2026 — Photos & Waypoints

Photos and waypoints are planned for the August Founder Beta update, expanding ReconMaps beyond vehicle tracking to documenting locations along the trail. Users will be able to place standard markers, capture and attach photos, and broadcast an Echo 11 waypoint to the convoy, creating an easy-to-follow visual record directly on the map.
